Lessons from being parents (1)

Self-sacrifice

The moment Andrew was born, I had to learn to give up many things, in the process realising idols that I never knew I had. Sleep is top of the list, and also the concept of ‘me-time’. Previously, it was quite straightforward – I didn’t mind doing things around the house for Joyce, but now the competition for time, energy and attention has intensified and the dependent always wins. So one of the earliest (and continual) challenges is about loving enough to be self-sacrificial enough. In fact, selfishness on my part made everyone including me unhappy. I became more joyful in serving my family, even though I must admit it still gets tiring. Classic example of dying to self to gain more.
